Junior High

Grades 7-8

In Junior High, we elevate student learning to prepare each child for high school. We encourage and support each student to reach his or her full potential through differentiated instruction. In math, we challenge our students to be problem solvers and offer multiple class levels including Algebra I and Algebra I Honors. In science, we use HMH Dimensions which is aligned with the current Next Generation Science Standards. We encourage higher level thinking and application through weekly hands-on science experiments. Seventh grade students participate in the Regional, District, and State Science Fairs. In language arts, the junior high concentrates on critical thinking and writing in response to literature, as well as essay writing according to the MLA format. In social studies, students examine history and geography through research, simulations, and discussions. Eighth grade students also participate in the National History Day Project and the Diocesan Academic Competition.

Through these experiences, St Pius X students will gain the crittical thinking skills, knowledge, and tools needed to best prepare them for high school.

Standardized Testing

St. Pius X School uses the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessment for kindergarten through eighth grade students. The MAP assessment was introduced by the Diocese of Covington and is administered to students three times a year. Test results are reported to parents and are used throughout the year to design student instruction and to study the strengths and weaknesses of the curriculum. Test results are also used to place students in appropriate ability groups in certain academic areas.

Eighth graders take the High School Placement Test (HSPT) in mid December at the high school they plan on attending. St. Pius X offers preparation for this test beginning in September.
