Kindergarten

An Individualized Curriculum

The kindergarten curriculum is a full day curriculum that centers on religion, language arts and math. Science and social studies are also a part of the curriculum. Kindergarten also receives extra-curricular classes in music, physical education, art, library, and STEM computer classes. The kindergarten is also exposed to many other topics by field trips and guest speakers.

The kindergarten curriculum is individualized to serve the needs of our students. We meet the needs of our students through differentiated instruction, RtI-Response to Intervention, and by small group instruction. Our goal is for each child to find success in learning. All of our kindergarten through fourth grade teachers have been trained in Orton Gillingham program, which enables us to add a multisensory approach to our instruction.

An important role that we want to instill in our students is their service to our community. We are involved in many service projects throughout the year that help to expose them to the needs of others. We put our faith in action with our annual Castle of Cans project. Kindergarteners inspire the whole school to donate cans and food to local families in need. By handling all phases of this service project, our students walk in the footsteps of Jesus and continue His work here on Earth.

Parent involvement is also a key part of our curriculum. We expect our parents to work as a team with the teachers for the success of the students. Parents are welcomed into the classroom for Parent Story Time and other activities that happen throughout the year.

Standardized Testing

St. Pius X School uses the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessment for kindergarten through eighth grade students. The MAP assessment was introduced by the Diocese of Covington and is administered to students three times a year. Test results are reported to parents and are used throughout the year to design student instruction and to study the strengths and weaknesses of the curriculum. Test results are also used to ability group students in some academic areas.
