Intermediate
Grades 4-6
Students in the St. Pius intermediate grades apply the basic skills they have previously learned as the content areas become more in-depth. The students are now reading to learn as opposed to learning to read. More emphasis is placed on the learner’s responsibility for himself or herself, spiritually, academically, and personally.
The transition years between primary and junior high include increased use of technology. Students in grades 4 have 1:1 use of Chromebooks. Additionally at this level, students begin switching classes. This occurs for three subjects in fourth grade, all subjects in fifth grade, and all subjects including switching for leveled instruction in sixth grade. This allows more specialized instruction in the subject area.
Reaching all learners through differentiation is emphasized in the intermediate grades. Examples of this are the use of weekly hands-on activities in science and the availability of a math resource/language arts teacher for the fifth and sixth grade classes. All teachers offer after school study time for students who need additional review.
The goal of the St. Pius intermediate curriculum is to prepare all students for success in junior high.
Standardized Testing
St. Pius X School uses the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessment for kindergarten through eighth grade students. The MAP assessment was introduced by the Diocese of Covington and is administered to students three times a year. Test results are reported to parents and are used throughout the year to design student instruction and to study the strengths and weaknesses of the curriculum. Test results are also used to ability group students in some academic areas.
